Expand Your Music
Vocabulary
You might wonder why this
aspect in radio disc jockeying came late, but don’t be. Because not
all radio disc jockeys deal with records, playlists and hit charts.
Remember Ryan Seacrest? I’ve heard many stories of disc jockeying
success, some of them worked formerly as nurses, teachers,
accountants, doctors and computer programmers.
It’s a fact that we all
have our own musical preferences. Some people would stick to one
genre of music forever, while others change their preferences over
time. In radio, you cannot pick the type of song that you are going
to play. So a good advice is for you to embrace the entire spectrum
of music, from classic to contemporary, novelty to world, hiphop to
jazz, your musical taste must be very flexible.
Now how do you expand your
music library? You don’t have to buy records that you don’t like to
have. Once in a while, be familiar with other music genres by tuning
in to a jazz station, a contemporary Christian Music station, an
oldies, or maybe a rock music station.
Make sure once a week, you
get hold of that music magazine and learn the latest ins and outs of
the industry. Continue to page 6.
