Name: Torey Slatter
Position: Station Manager
Station: URFM 88.2, Levin New Zealand
Freshbook: In what year did UR FM 88.2 start? How did it come up and who were those people who conceived the idea of putting up UR FM?
Torey: URFM started in January 2009. We are only 9 months old. This came up one day after Perry the Co-Owner and myself decided to create a station where the public have a say in what they would like. So we put our plan in action and successfully created URFM. We also wanted a station completely ad free so we decided to have a non-commercial radio which worked well on the budget.
Freshbook: How does UR FM 88.2 differ from all other stations in the locale? What kind of programming does it offer to Levin?
Torey: URFM differs from any other radio station because we focus on the one area we are broadcasting, such as LEVIN. We offer programming for all people such as playing songs from the older generation and mixed with the younger generation to help contrast with the audience we get.
Freshbook: Since UR FM started, what is that about UR FM that you are proud of?
Torey: I'm proud of URFM because it's local, it's a non-profit organization that gives back to the community and business, to help them and there companies, such as CINEMA 3 LEVIN. Cinema 3 is proudly URFM's Main Sponsor and helps recognize our station.
Freshbook: Does UR FM encounter competition in the market? How does your station handle competition?
Torey: No, URFM does not encounter competition in the market as we work with other stations to put together great shows. We handle competition by promoting our station in different ways in which brings audience to listen.
Freshbook: What is the advantage and what are the challenges of running a radio station on the internet?
Torey: The advantage is that you can not only reach local people we can reach new audiences using internet technologies.
Freshbook: What was the toughest time for UR FM and how did the staff handle and solve it?
Torey: The toughest time for URFM was when Levin suffered Damage from a storm in 2008. As we were setting up the radio station this interfered with then progress as our transmitting aerial was ripped off our studio roof as well as the transmitter itself broke down and needing replacing. The staff handled this by helping the company speed up progress by including the help from the staff at Cinema 3.
Freshbook: How do you see UR FM 5 years from now?
Torey: I can see a successful radio station and maybe we will expanding to more areas in the country.
Freshbook: Any message to your listeners?
Torey: Thanks for tuning in to URFM. It's UR VOICE, UR STATION, UR MUSIC. 88.2 Levin
